This talk explores how Black, Indigenous and Brown Latinx diasporic youth are negotiating, reimagining, and cultivating a sense of place and belonging in Tkaronto (Toronto). Engaging with the creative work of local Kichwa artist and filmmaker, Samay Arcentales Cajas, and my ongoing research on Latinx community organizing, I demonstrate how Latinx youth navigate a fraught urban landscape in a way that is unsettling. What I mean by unsettling is that Latinx people can be heard exposing and challenging how racial-colonial violence and intersecting power structures shape their everyday lives and the urban spaces they inhabit. They can also be heard refusing normative claims to space and belonging in relation to the city of Toronto, the Canadian nation-state, and the Latin American community, effectively critiquing the exclusions intrinsic to these formations. These unsettling Latinx senses of place also reveal different ways of being in place and belonging that are premised in relationships of care, mutual support, and solidarity, which hold important lessons for working towards decolonial futures.
