Historic land use patterns and climate change have placed a great deal of pressure on these socioeconomically and biologically productive ecosystems. Effective protection and restoration of these important ecosystems requires carefully constructed science support that brings to bear the highest quality, user-driven research. Over the past six years the University of Michigan Water Center has taken an adaptive approach to selecting, supporting and assessing projects that engage end-users, or those best positioned to employ the science generated, in project work related to the Great Lakes and broader US coastal ecosystems.
