He works as part of the Hockey Strategy and Analytics team, helping to evaluate players, teams, and strategies from in-game data to assist coaching and roster construction decisions. His main areas of research include artificial intelligence, specifically multiagent systems and reinforcement learning, and sports analytics. While at Waterloo, David worked with Dr. Kate Larson and Dr. Tim Brecht studying the impact of teams, or sub-groups, on how reinforcement learning agents learn within multiagent systems. He was also an assistant captain of the Waterloo Men's Ice Hockey team during the first few years of his PhD. David and colleagues have published several papers at top AI and sports conferences, including IJCAI, AAMAS, RLC, and LINHAC, and earned a LINHAC best paper award in 2022 for their work on modeling passing lanes using NHL puck and player tracking data.\n\nWhether you dream of working in sports analytics, AI research, or just want to see how math and computation shape elite performance, this is a talk you won’t want to miss. \n\nA social reception will follow immediately after,  with refreshments.
